Mr. Harper, stop this clock!

The National Debt Clock left Mile 0 of the TransCanada Highway in Victoria, British Columbia on February 22, 2011 and is expected – 9 provinces and 8,800 kilometres later – to arrive in Halifax, Nova Scotia the last week of March 2011.

The large aluminum clock which measures 6 foot 6 inches high and 12 feet long, displays both the per second increase in public debt and the per person figure. The clock has changeable face plates for each province. A customized trailer allows for a rolling display of the clock.

The 2011 Debt Clock Tour sets out to create public awareness, elevate the importance of balanced budgets as a public policy priority and provide a means for the public to engage lawmakers.

An older version of the clock was toured across Canada by the CTF in the 1990s. Those efforts helped pave the way for then-Finance Minister Paul Martin’s historic 1995 federal budget that cut spending and ushered in an era of economic prosperity for Canada. The clock was retired in 1998 when federal and provincial governments began balancing their budgets.

In 2008, when governments returned to a sea of red ink, the CTF created and launched an online debt clock at www.debtclock.ca. However, many CTF supporters longed to resurrect the original clock and in late 2010 launched a successful fundraising initiative. A video can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RajmgKDQUPw.

The budget for the 2011 Debt Clock Tour is $64,633. Each kilometre of pavement will cost $3.65 and the CTF needs donations to ensure the Tour is a success: https://taxpayer.com/donate.
