Location

Lamar Canyon, United States, Wyoming

We spent Monday night in Yellowstone at the park's hotel at Mammoth Hot Springs. We have been to Yellowstone before, but we have never driven through the Lamar Valley area. Doug's friend Penny, a Yellowstone expert, had recommended driving through there at dawn to see wildlife. She also had told us that it's the only area where you might spot wolves. We got up a bit after dawn and drove through. We didn't see any wolves, but we did see lots of bison and some pronghorn antelope and deer. Driving through the Lamar Valley led us to exit the park through the northeast entrance which we had not done before. We naively followed the routing recommended by our GPS and Yahoo Maps, and ended up driving over the Beartooth Pass (elevation 10,947 feet) on the SECOND most gnarly, twisty, edge-of-the-cliff mountain road we've ever driven. Doug is a guy who enjoys driving twisty moutain roads, but this is the type of road that is too stressful to be worth it. The WORST one is the road through Colorado National Monument in Grand Junction, Colorado.
