We woke up at 5-ish am and got the house ready for the handoff to Neal. We loaded our gear into a pimpin Hyundai Accent (with a sweet ass satellite radio system) and headed down Highway 1 to LAX. We made it to LAX without any drama and proceeded to check into our flight. The delta airlines guy behind the desk kind of freaked us out when he demanded that we show him our South African Visas (which are unnecessary for this trip…so of course we don’t have them). After some heckling by Nicci, the guy was able to bring up his computer screen that indicated we only needed a blank page in our passports for a stamp. Phew!
Going through security, we had the friendliest TSA guy ever. He told us a story (more likely a joke) about a flight attendant that went through his line when he used to work in Dallas. He said she walked up, assumed the spread eagle position, and requested “Male Assist!”
We arrived at our gate with around 2 hours until our flight, so we hung out at El Cholo Cantina and grubbed down on some breakfast burritos. Yum.
Flight 1, LAX to ATL. Around 4 hours. No free movies…bummer.
At ATL, Nic and I tanked up on a Caribou Coffee latte, some hot chocolate, and a slice of chocolate cake. We stocked up on that new 5 gum, trail mix, a National Geographic, The Bourne Deception paperback (terrible so far), and some Mentos.
Flight 2, ATL to JNB. 15 hours and 17 minutes of pure airborne joy. It seems that on international flights, the staff is automatically more friendly, the planes are nicer, and the people flying are less pissed off in general. We had our full choice of individual movies, including everything from action thrillers to crazy Asian films (Kung-Fu Cyborg anyone?... I’m serious). I ended up watching Fantastic Mr. Fox (which is AWESOME), Avatar, and Tropic Thunder. Nicci watched Invictus (also awesome), Legion (terrible), and The Wolfman (also terrible). They fed us 3 times with (diner, midnight snack, breakfast…kind of), and watered us every few hours. All in all, it was about as nice as 15 hours on a plane can be when you’re riding in the back of the bus.
