Alice Springs, Australia

Rise and shine was bright and early today as we wanted to catch Uluru’s mood as the sun rose over her. We followed a bloated tour bus to the new 20 Million dollar Sunrise viewing area and settled in for the show. Marc-André learned all about shutter speed on the fancy camera as we took shot after shot trying to catch that one, postcard worthy picture.

At one point we couldn’t help but be baffled by the shear volume of people just pouring out of bus after bus, congregating on this viewing platform waiting, like us, to catch that one elusive shot of the Mood Rock.

Confident she was done changing colours for a bit, we headed to Kata Tjuta or The Olga’s. This is another sedimentary rock formation but instead of the one famous chunk it’s many, much less famous chunks scattered around. We once again laced up the old running shoes (now red from the outback sand), strapped on the hydration backpacks and embarked on the 7.4km Valley of the Winds walk. This was a bit more challenging than the Uluru base walk but nothing compared St Mary’s Peak. At one point I felt like a needed to sit, just then we crossed a group of senior citizens and I felt suddenly ashamed… if they can do it, hell I should be able to do it!

After the walk we made a quick detour and snuck back into the overpriced resort and took another 20 minute shower…  Nice and Clean we headed straight to Alice Springs in true hwy junky form, skipping over everything and anything in our path. We even forwent the trip to Kings Canyon and apparently we really missed out… oh well!

We did stop at Devil’s Marbles but just for a quick look and a pee. We got to chatting with a Kiwi and he mentioned a much nicer way to get to Cairns so we will be following his advice and traveling on the Burk then Gulf Development Roads instead of the Barkley Hwy.

We arrived in Alice Springs and settled in at the G’Day Mate Caravan Park. Our only reason for picking this place over all the others was that they supplied free clothes pins for the clothes line. Maybe the pool had something to do with it too!  We wasted no time getting into our swimsuit and made our way to the pool. It was just before dinner and the pool was swarming with kids, all of them running around, doing cannonballs, splashing each other AND US *shakes fist*, fighting over noodles and beach balls... Marc-André and I looked like two old fudie duddies at the end of the pool but we did enjoy the commotion as it reminded us of home.
