To give you a bit of background information, we are traveling in a rental can from a company called Spaceships. To encourage communication between travelers they have what’s called the spaceship community. We are supposed to wave and walk up to fellow Space Travelers and trade DVDs and chat about our travels.
This was our first spaceship spotting and we were so excited. It was the cutest couple from New Zeland, the cuteness factor is directly related to the number of grey hairs on their heads. Either way we were all so excited to see another space traveler we practically jumped out of our respective vans at the gas station in Wilcamina. They mentioned a must see, in the form of White Cliffs, an Opal field, where people much like in the gold rush days go to stack their claim. You can walk around and there is camping.
So we arrive in White Cliffs and make our way to the Red Earth Opal Café where we chat with the owner who is an opal miner. He points the way to a visitors trail which loops around the opal fields. We drive around, exiting the van here and there in search of that illusive Opal gen but to no avail we found but rocks. They are from a great inland ocean that once filed this land which is impressive, I guess.
This place was crazy, there are open mine shafts everywhere! Honestly, this place looks like the surface of the moon. People live in rickety old trailers and sheds made out of corrugated metal. At first we thought what a way to live, then we realized most people live underground in the mines shafts and drives (the tunnelled out sections) we learnt that from Jock, a hilarious local who showed up his tunnelled out home.
Toward the end of our trip we saw a sing for Brian Moors Opal showroom so we decide o stop in, Brian and his wife Carol ended up being the kindest, most generous hosts, they showed us around their underground home and in their yard, it was great! They even has some helpful tourist information for us.
