"Once in a lifetime Part III - China"

Many years ago I saw an advert for a guided package tour to China. It really appealed to me, the only problem being that it returned on the 1st day of term. So that idea faded away. However, years and many destinations later we were in Brisbane airport and saw an exhibition of photos of Chinese locations. Something in the beauty and exoticism that the images conjured up made us decide that we would indeed make that trip.

These days we don't do packages unless they are incredibly cheap or we have no choice. We are much more confident and also nowadays we want the freedom to go at our own pace. Still this seemed the biggest challenge so far.

We had thought we might need guides and drivers but the more we researched, the more we became convinced that we could do this (fairly) independently. So many recounts of other travellers' experiences could not be wrong.
