Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Surprisingly.... arriving in Rio de Janeiro yesterday has not been as manic and busy as I had anticipated. Our group had a great hotel in Copacabana and after checking in we went on a guided whistle stop tour of key attractions (given that is is carnival week our tour guide thought this was best!).

Our first stop was Corcovado to visit Christ the Redeemer in the Tijuca National Park. At 30 meters high it was very impressive, although perhaps not as impossing as I had imagined. The day was so hot but the panoramic views of the city were incredible, it is very beautiful.

We then went to the district of Santa Teresa which was picturesque with stunning views across the bay. From here we saw Escadaria Selaron, a 215 step staircase leading to Santa Teresa Convent which has been tiled by the artist Selaron in Brazilian colours, over the years he has collected and been sent tiles from all over the world. It has made what was a dull set of steps into a famous icon that has stared in many films.

We took a cable car up to Sugar Loaf for incredible views of Rio, the sun was beginning to set and the atmosphere was amazing.

Today has been fantastic, I collected my ticket for the carnival parade at the Sambadromon on Sunday, checked out of the hotel and spent the entire day on Copacabana beach with Julia, Monica and Vicky...eating ice creams and sunning ourselves. Tonight I checked into my hostel which is very nice, the staff are really friendly and the girls in my dorm seem fun. I´ve stuffed myself with pizza and beer tonight and am catching an early one, tomorrow I am hitting Ipanema beach with the girls then we are off to Maracana football stadium tomorrow afternoon to watch the semi final between Vasco and Fluminense... it is going to be amazing!

Wow last nights samba school parade at the Sambadromo was incredible, one of the best events I have ever seen. We had 6 schools parade, each lasting 80mins and it went on till 5.30am this morning! The floats, costumes, dances and performances were superb. I didn´t take my camera but will show you all some official piccies when they are released.

After 6 wonderful days in Rio with glorious sunshine I´ve woken today with a runny nose, sore throat and rain! Its definitely time for my flight home, after a little bit of final shopping of course! Ciao!!
