more wow in St P

Sorry folks, eventually I will get the hang of this blogging caper. First of all I am hoping that this entry will be public, not like the previous two which I think I accidentally restricted in access and now don't seem to be able to change in status. First of all I should reiterate that I am having the most amazing time. The first week was spent catching up with friends and getting the hang of things, finding out where to eat and where to buy books, cds and dvds. Once I had all that under my belt, I decided to get a reader's ticket at the Public Library which turned out to be a surprisingly speedy affair. I didn't need my letter from SLCCS identifying me and I didn't need my extra photo. That was the easy bit. It was harder to use the catalogue and find what I wanted and if it wasn't for a kind librarian I think I would still be wandering around the building wondering what to do. The books I want to use are in the new part of the library which is out on Moskovsky Prospekt. It is a fine new building but I don't think anyone in their right mind would call it user-friendly. I just wandered around it last Thursday until I saw the room with the periodicals and cornered another helpful librarian to show me the ropes. Prof Massov had alerted me to the nicer points of getting photocopies done there so I knew what to expect, but although it was an improvement on the past it was still far too time-consuming.

I am fast running out of time here at Cafe Max at 90 Nevsky prospekt. Will see how this goes and if it works will come back tomorrow with my diary and write a proper entry. Am starting to miss Oz. Best to all, Lyndall, aka Linda Nilovna

This is my final entry for this journal. I meant to write one last entry in London after visitng Wimbledon on the first day of play but was distracted by London's wonderful book-shops. Wimblerswas every bit as special as I had thought it would be. I got to see Roger Federer, Ana Ivanovic...

Greetings from rainy Nottingham! This is my last full day here and it has proved to be a good rest and relaxation destination. As many of you know my mother's cousin whom I have always called Aunt Emma has lived here for the last thirty or so years. She used to be a high school teacher of...

Zdrav comrades! Another week to remember and part of it turned out to be rather challenging. Last Sunday evening I visited my good friend Natasha's flat on the occasion of her husband's sixth third birthday. It was a cosy company of eight family members and friends and we had a great...

Salmon and cognac, oh my!

Sounds like you're having a wonderful time, Lyndall.... Definitely a tad more swanky than our budget suppers in good old Shevchenko! Is there still a lot of theatre and music on? Hope you enjoy the rest of your adventure, we're all thinking of you and can't wait to hear your stories when you get back! Love, Meg

Countryside and Repin

Written by leggett  6 months ago

How wonderful to get to Repin's house. He is one of my favourites (bought a book about him at Artists' House in Moscow). I know envy is one of the seven deadly sins, but it is plaguing me now! My sister just called to say she has her Russian visa (I am still considering cutting her off for not taking me with her). And yes, the countryside is so perfect - so green, and full of wildflowers and little creatures that snuffle and chew in the grass (which also seems to have something special about it), and then there is the prospect of the forests, with even more wonderful flowers and green. Yes, it is easy to feel melancholy about the prospect of missing it. Still, just knowing it once is a blessing! I think you are enjoying every minute - wonderful! All the best, Susan.
