Venice was quite impressive but the masses of tourists even in winter and the fact that you keep walking past 4 to 5 of the same things the whole time (a shop selling masks/costumes, a pizzeria, fashion shop or a church) made me think this place really was as touristy as people described. The architecture and art sure is amazing though. It could even be a romantic place but that wasnt our mission ...
A place to stay is quite hard to find in the middle of the historic part of Venice, depending on your pockets of course. I settled for a 3 star hotel which was quite nice at 70 euros and wasnt too far from whatever we wanted to see.
I found that around the busier places Italians werent so pleasant, but if you get off the beaten track they can be very nice.
