Location

Winona, United States, Minnesota

An easy day today. We were planning on taking a tour of the Winona Boat factory, the manufacturers of our kayaks. After 8 miles we locked through dam #6 and called our contact at the factory. Bad news. There was 4 1/2 feet of mud in the factory from the recent monsoons. The factory was shut down and nobody was in a good mood and certainly not giving tours. This was a real disappointment. The good news is that today we had sun! We charged the phone and took a cab ride into town to do laundry. Russ, a friend, picked us up and returned us to camp. Tomorrow is another hard push - hoping to make 27 miles and into La Crosse. Even though we are in the areas hit hard with flooding, it has not affected us. The flooding is confined to the smaller streams and not the big river. The locks control the water levels and tend to even out the effects. We haven't seen an increase in the debris in the river and everything is going according to plan. Our equipment is good and we are doing well. We just need a little more sun! ... by dz

Hey you two! So glad your journals got 'caught' up on the website, was starting to worry!! I have especially liked the last few entrie, as I used to take Juvenile girls from Trego to Winona on a 9 day trip through St. Croix Girls Camp. I have not so fond memories of being wind bound on Lake Pepin too!! Wish there was some way to join up with you for a section--but I"m starting back on my "reconstruction phase" again... Miss you guys and love keeping up with your Great Adventure!! Joe, hope the back is doing better. Anne, I bet you 'got some pipes going on there girl"!ha Love, binner

enjoy some cheese!

Hi Joe & Anne - what a nice surprise to get your phone call today. It really is fun to hear about your adventures & to hear that despite the challenges, you are having fun. It is really strange that you are meandering back & forth between MN & WI. The Mississippi wouldn't be so long if it were straighter, apparently! Stop and enjoy some cheese when you're on the Wisconsin side. Keep paddling & keep smiling (and beware of the bums!) :) Rhonda Silence

Take care of that back.

Keep it up! We are all thinking of you back here, living vicariously (sp?) through your adventure. Watch out for those crazy cheeseheads!
