Woke up in the back seat of the car in a miserable state around 7am. My pocket thermometer said the temperature was in the 30's, and it was still raining. Continued sitting in the cold car until the rain stopped around 9.

I couldn't pack up the tent because it was soaking wet, and camping had lost its luster, so I left the tent where it was and drove back to the Motel 6 and got a room for the night - so much for my backcountry camping plans. Took a shower in the room, put on clean clothes, and regrouped for another assault on the wilderness which had thus far beaten me.

Drove back to my campsite. It was now around 11am, and the sun was out and it was warming up. The tent was dry, so I packed it away. I planned to hike to Holly Lake - a small, high-altitude lake some 6 miles away; so off I marched. It was a pretty hike, and I hardly saw anyone except for an old, one-eyed park ranger clearing trees off the trail. Unfortunately, I was stopped about 2 miles short of my goal by impassable snow fields, and a snow storm. But I did find an amazing campsite high in the valley, complete with a resident marmot.

I hiked back down and started driving back to the Motel 6 by a different route, hoping to see some new scenery. I stopped to take a picture of the mountains, and when I started to get back into the car I saw that my driver's-side front tire was flat. I didn't notice it go flat and had no idea how long it had been that way. I put on the spare and continued on my scenic drive, vowing not to let it perturb my good mood. Shortly came upon a herd of bison crossing the road, stopping traffic.

Made it back to Jackson and found there was a tire repair place less than a block from the motel, but it was too late in the day, so I would have to go in the morning. Had dinner at a Mexican restaurant called El Abuelito and had the Chile Colorado. It was acceptable. Got back to the room and turned on the weather channel... the rest of the week was forecast to be cold, windy, raining, and snowing.
