Hangzhou is a little city south west of Shanghai, and it is apparently the home of the original West Lake. The Chinese seem to love their lakes, and this lake is pretty spectacular. You can take a boat to the middle island - once a home to a retired General - and the world inside is incredibly peaceful.
This area is incredibly beautiful, but also quite complicated to navigate it's intricacies without a guidebook or a lick of Mandarin. Needless to say, it was a novel experience.
