Almeirim, Brazil

Martin bullied his way through rain and large waves to swim another 74 km today. The river is up to 15 wide, but even with such vastness, the escort boat had a close shave. Rain was limiting visibility to only a few km when suddenly a huge ocean tanker appeared through the haze, bearing down on us at full speed. It didn’t respond to our radio call, and only veered off after seeing us at the last moment.

The currents here are still strong, but are reputed to slow down considerably as the Atlantic Ocean begins to influence the Amazon River. Martin is currently resting in his room, mentally preparing himself for the last ten days of his swim. He’ll have to push forward through a wide, windy, desolate section of river in which ocean tanker traffic will continue to increase as we approach Belem.

Martin refreshed himself at the end of the day with Igor’s Spring of Life, one of his products from Planet of Health. The team is currently anchored at Almeirim.
