Location

Ilha Pirica, Brazil

Martin started a little early today, and swam a few minutes later than normal; he had a goal in mind. He began the day 82 km shy of 4000 on the expedition, and 85 km short of his Guinness World Record total of 4003 km on the Yangtze River in 2004.

The currents were a tad slower than normal, but Martin struggled on, ending the day at sunset just a few kilometers upstream from Urucurituba after swimming 92 km. The team toasted the exhausted swimmer at dinner for his accomplishment, and he marked the moment by playing us all some of his favorite country-western songs on his Peruvian guitar. The party ended early, as he warned us not to start celebrating too much yet. “I still have almost a month of swimming, and from here to Belem things will become more difficult and much more dangerous.”
