After fighting his way through half of the world’s most dangerous river, Martin is sunburned, tired, and sore, but overall is in much better shape than expected.

Actually, he’s two days ahead of schedule. Aided by the highest water levels to flow through Peru in many years, it took Martin only 29 days to swim 2654 km. The hard part, however, is yet to come as he still expects another 41 days or so to cover a similar distance to the river’s mouth at Belem, Brazil. The closer Martin gets to the Atlantic Ocean, the more difficult the swim will become as he deals with wind and waves on the bigger water, slower current, and eventually ocean tides.

The sores on the backs of Martin’s legs are a nuisance, but the swimmer summed it up today as he told us, “If it was easy, someone would have already done it. I’ll just have to ignore the pain and continue swimming.” Martin toughed it out for another 95 km today, his highest total since entering Brazil a week ago.
