Location

Omaguas, Peru

Today was a major milestone as Martin negotiated dangerous whirlpools at the confluence of the Ucayali and Maranon rivers, considered by most as the start of the Amazon River proper.

The Ucayali drains the Peruvian Andes, while the Ecaudorian Amazon flows through the Maranon. Further upstream, the Amazon is known by different names as we’ve spent the last fifteen days on the Rio Tambo, Rio Ucayali, and Puinahua canal. We only have two months and approximately 4000 km to go. Yippee.

The crew lunched on wild alligator today. Late last night a four foot Lugarto found its way on deck and was quickly disposed of by Jamie, Jarvez, and a large stick. Martin swam another 101 km, and will reach Iquitos tomorrow afternoon (Friday, February 16th).
