At 11am we went to check-in, but they had double booked our room. So they paid the difference and we stayed in a more expensive place down the corridor. The rooms were fine but nothing to write home about. After we dropped our stuff off we headed out for lunch. We couldn't find either of the places we were looking for but had lunch in an enornous park called Villa Borghese. In the morning when we were near the colosseum I saw some peddle powered carts and thought that looked like a good way to see a lot of the city in one go. So we hired one. I think they are the best thing since sliced bread, and Jodi can't complain because she lets me do most of the peddling. It wasn't clear to us where we were and weren't allowed to go, so we just went anywhere. Some streets looked like they had been closed to cars for the day, but then occassionally we suddenly ended up in traffic. We were even sitting at a set of lights once. We didn't get stopped by the police though. I think it was a roaring success. Jo had fun too.
After a short rest and returning our transport we went to St. Peter's Basilica. It is massive! Absolutely enormous! I wonder how much it cost to build. It was finished some time near 1650. For more details go to wikipedia.org or interact.cornerstone.edu.au and look for a thread called Les and Carmels Excellent adventure on a forum called the dunny door. The sun and clouds were obliging and we got some great photos.
We are running a competition. There is a photo attached to this entry of Jodi amongst a big crowd of people on the Spanish Steps. For those of you who don't know what the Spanish Steps are or what they look like, it is a photo of a lot of people sitting on some steps. The first to post a comment to this blog entry, correctly describing where Jodi is in the photo gets a souvenir of their nomination from one of the countries still left on our itinerary.
