Hello TripTracker,

As mentioned in my previous post about Windows Mobile, an E-mailing function will work great. I have a Hyves account (Simuliar to Facebook but oriented on the Netherlands). It is possible to send a E-mail with a picture to a (public hidden E-mail addres) it is placed directly on my Hyves account for all my friends.
We are leaving to New Zealand and I want to use TripTracker to inform my family and friends about our adventures! Butt the roaming datarates are HUGE, if I only take my phone with me I could create GPS enabled photo's and a text in the Body of the E-mail. This way I can update anytime anywhere my triptracker data and don't need to search for a internet bar / pub. I tried to open the TripTracker website on my phone, it took alotta time and alotta bandwidth :(

So my idea:
- Grap my phone and startup the Photo application
- Select the GPS Photo feature of the Kaiser phone (To Enable GPS photo Click here <-- Link
- Take the picture and while reviewing the picture select SEND
- Select Outlook or Hotmail E-mail account
- Use onedutch@triptracker.net address (Example)
- Type the body text in the E-mail (Perhaps a reference code in the subject so TripTracker 'known' it is you)
- Send
- TripTracker engine will receive the E-mail and processes the photo for GPS data and add's a entry in the Trip!

Best Regards, Tom from the Netherlands

Tom, hi!

I totally agree with you, this would certainly be a nice addition to the service. We have actually thought about this feature a while back, but weren't convinced that it would be used much. Perhaps we'll reconsider this and boost the priority of this enhancement -- The ability to easily import photos and other data to TripTracker is certainly a design priority for us.

Thanks for the idea!

Hey,

I would also love to be able to upload photos using email... Like he said I can then easily send photos from my phone anywhere in the world for cheap. Its also easier to load Gmail then Triptracker.... I will also be tempted to buy a GPS enabled phone then.

OK, I'm convinced we should start working on this.

Dear Braco,

At my Day Job the developers have a paper at their door saying : The impossible request will be fulfilled inmediately, mircales will take a little more. Is this E-mail function finished (beta perhaps) before/around upcomming friday? My trip will start on friday :)

On more thought about this E-mail function, you would have thinked of it aswell, is that it should include a line in the body which the 'TripTracker Engine' interpretates as the Trip the data in the E-mail should be added, some people have multipe trips.

Best Regards, Tom

Not likely :)

This feature is not as simple to implement as it may seem. First of all, we would need to associate an email address with each trip, not each user. Secondly, there is the issue of abuse - SMTP does not include any authentication, so there's a good chance that your trip gets spammed by a third party. Sure, we have solutions, but it may take some time to iron out the details.

Tom, Adrian, hi!

With regard to the "email photos" feature, it appears that we've finally come up with a solution which balances security and ease-of-use. This is how it would work:

1. On the trip edit screen, the user can specify the email address (mailbox) from which he intends to update his trip.
2. TripTracker sends an email to that address.
3. The user posts a new trip entry by replying to that email. Attached photos and GPS tracks are also added to the trip.
4. TripTracker acknowledges the update by sending another email to the user.
5. The user can post a new trip entry by replying to that email, and so on.

The idea is that trips can be updated by replying to emails sent by TripTracker. Each email is good for only one update -- an update can only be done by replying to the *last* confirmation email that you received from TripTracker. This protects us against spam from worms which harvest email addresses from infected computers.

Before we go ahead and implement this, I was hoping you might comment on the proposal.

Thanks!
